In week two of the series Catchphrase, we talked about how belief is about more than just facts – it’s about a relationship with a person.
SCRIPTURE:
At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me.” LUKE 22:66-67
Catchphrase – Week 2
Sometimes it can be hard to find the right words to explain why we believe what we believe. Sure, we might know the facts about Jesus’ life and have several Bible verses memorized and ready to go, but when we’re asked why we believe those things are true, we find ourselves more than a little tongue-tied.
Believe it or not, even Jesus found Himself in the position to answer questions about belief. He was making some major claims about who He was while He was on Earth and people wanted to know why they should believe any of it was true. His answer?
“If I tell you, you will not believe me.” (Luke 22:67)
Seems like a strange answer, right? But you see, Jesus knew that rattling off a list of facts wouldn’t do any good when it came to helping others believe in Him. He knew that for people to really believe, they had to get to know Him first.
The truth is it’s hard to articulate why we believe what we believe because belief is about so much more than just facts and verses. It’s about the relationship. We believe in God because we’ve experienced Him in our lives. And those experiences help to build the foundation for our belief.
Think today about how you’ve experienced God in your life. What about your relationship with Him could you share with others to help illustrate why you believe what you believe?
