In week two of Out of This World, we talked about how putting others first as a way of living in a way that’s out of this world.
SCRIPTURE:
“Don’t be selfish, don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too.” – PHILIPPIANS 2:3-4 (NLT)
“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had…” PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11 (NLT)
Out Of This World – Week 2
We are all experts at seeing how everything could work together to benefit ourselves. All of our decisions are filtered through the grid of, “How will this affect me?” or “Will this help me or hurt me?” And those questions aren’t necessarily wrong; it just becomes a problem when our whole world starts revolving around us. This isn’t just a modern day problem, which is why Paul writes in Philippians:
Don’t be selfish, don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others too. (Philippians 2:3-4 NLT)
So Paul tells us what we all know. We shouldn’t be selfish. We need to be humble, and think of others, but how do we do this when our natural tendency is to do the opposite? Jesus had every right to think of Himself, to pull the God card, and demand to be elevated yet instead He humbled Himself to the point of death. He modeled for us what choosing selflessness looks like. For us, it simply starts with looking at our decisions in light of the question: will this help or hurt others? Jesus can transform our thoughts and decisions if we let Him. Out of this world thinking puts others first. That’s what out of this world thinking and living is about—being like Jesus so the world here can get a glimpse of God, of heaven on earth.
