In week two of Unexpected, we talked about what if the most important Christmas gift we’ll ever receive was actually given to us long ago—a friend who gets us? Jesus.

SCRIPTURE:

As he considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David,” the angel said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife. For the child within her was conceived by the Holy Spirit. And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet: “Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God is with us.’” – MATTHEW 1:20-23 (NLT)

This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.  – HEBREWS 4:15 (NLT)

Unexpected – Week 2

No matter what you are dealing with, or going through, or feeling, it’s always better when there is someone by your side. There is nothing better than feeling like you have someone in your life who gets you. We all want a friend like that. Someone who knows our story (even the embarrassing parts) and loves us anyway. Someone who knows us better than we know ourselves.

But no matter how close a friend may be, every friendship has limits. No one will ever be able to understand us all of the time. If we’re lucky, we can find someone whose loyalty toward us is pretty unshakeable, no matter what…but we’re all human, aren’t we? Even the very best friend can’t be a perfect friend.

This Christmas, let the celebration of Jesus’ birth be reminder of all the gifts He has given us—perfect friendship being one. In the book of Hebrews, the writer describes Jesus’ relationship with us in this way:

[He] understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do (Hebrews 4:15 NLT).

Jesus gets us. And not because He is God and perfect, but because He has actually experienced humanity in the same way we do, which is a gift to us—an unexpected gift. He is our perfect friend. The one who knows everything, forgives always, and loves us unconditionally. In Jesus we have the greatest gift available to us. We have a God who has not only rescued us, but Immanuel, God with us.
