To kick off the new series Power Play, this week we’re talking about what it means to serve someone else, and how sometimes our greatest power can come from our smallest acts.
SCRIPTURE:
“Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up for the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” John 13:3-5 NIV
Power Play – Week 1
Whether we realize it or not, most of us put a lot of effort and energy toward wondering what other people think about us. We wonder if we are being perceived well. We wonder if others like us. Reality is, trying to make sure we are well liked puts a lot of pressure on us. And it can be incredibly exhausting
But maybe there is a better way than focusing on ourselves, and what others
think of us. What can we learn from Jesus about this issue?
John 13:3 tells us, Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God. But how did Jesus use His power and influence?
So he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (John 13:4-5 NIV)
What did the most powerful person in the room do? He served other people. Instead of focusing so much on ourselves and what others think, we should take our cue from Jesus and choose to serve other people. We gain influence by putting others ahead of us. In fact, big power or influence comes from small acts.
Will you find a way today to serve someone else? You just might find that when you do, the experience is far more rewarding than focusing on yourself.
