In Week One of YOUR MOVE, we spoke about how when it comes to our parents, it’s our move to honor.

SCRIPTURE:

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.’” – EPHESIANS 6:1-3

Your Move – Week 1

When you were a little kid, who was the person you looked up to the most? Chances are pretty good that it was one—or both—of your parents. When you’re little, there are few people you think are cooler, smarter, or generally more awesome than your parents.

That’s why one of the most confusing parts of growing up is when you stop seeing your parents as just your parents and start seeing them as human beings. Human beings make mistakes. They overreact. They get things wrong. Human beings aren’t perfect. And when we realize our parents are actually human beings, we also realize they aren’t, in fact, perfect.

Most of you probably figured that out a long time ago. Some of you may just be realizing it. But regardless of when or how you recognized it, the fact that your parents aren’t always going to do the right thing or make the best decisions is frustrating. Because even when they’re wrong, they’re still our parents. And, as Paul tells us, we have a responsibility to honor them.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. ‘Honor your father and mother’–which is the first commandment with a promise–‘that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth’ (Ephesians 6:1-3 NIV).

Not as easy as it sounds, right? Honoring our parents doesn’t mean agreeing with everything they do or say. It doesn’t mean you think they’re right. But it does mean treating them with respect. It means choosing our words wisely. It means showing up when they need us. Because, as Paul points out, honoring our parents is what God has called us to do.

Is there something you can do this week to show honor to your parents?
